Easier imports and back on the AppStore

Squirrel 0.7.5 is out  and brings a better importer. First, you can now download files from the integrated web browser. If the file can be imported, Squirrel will allow you to do that directly. Then, the import sheet has been improved so you now have a preview of the account after the import. This allows you to quickly see which transaction is new, and which already exists. A new button even allows you to deselect duplicates.

For those of you who use Squirrel by adding new transactions from files, this is incredibly faster. By the way, the import process performances are now much better.

A CSV exporter has also been added, reported bugs fixed, and the interface got small improvements.

Finally, Squirrel is back on the AppStore. If you’ve accidentally removed it from your iPhone, or just want to have a look at it, you can now download it.

    Nice direct import features!! Thanks!

An idea for the next import:

Have support for PDF files for reconciling. This would split the window up, top being the account transactions, and bottom being a PDF bank statement. If you try to download a PDF from the in program browser, it should pop up a save to dialog box, with an option to open in the bottom pane after saving for reconciling.

The import feature really made me buy this great app. Stunningly simple design, yet powerful under the hood. Does all I want it to do – Mac style. Please keep up the great work.

    Hey,
well done, now i can navigate by keyboard rather than clicking on each new field when I enter a new transaction. Still have to give the new import feature a try, it sounds great, though. As with Gordon, this was the feature I eventually bougth Squirrel for.
Keep up with updates, they really make me look forward to Squirrel 2.0!

I gave a try to the application and it’s really a nice one (as I said you in a mail). Here is what can be improved IMHO:

    1. The opening balance of an account should not be put as a transaction. Instead it should be set in the details of the account. An initial balance is not a transaction (it doesn’t mean that I earnt that amount of money) and should not be mixed also to avoid confusion when creating reports.

    2. Fund transfers as well may be treated in a specific way and not as normal transactions, to avoid confusion in reports (they are seen as earnings or losses in reports) and not to have the need of creating a category just to categorize fund transfers. A more elegant approach could be that of creating “ad-hoc” transaction without a category and a description (filling in an editable description like it happens now is not very elegant as well) and not shown in reports.

    3. It would also be nice to have a way of managing “personal lendings” with ad-hoc “transactions”. These all are cash flows which isn’t interesting (indeed it’s confusing) to categorize. It would help keeping track of who owes how much to whom and again it would prevent confusing those fake incomes-outcomes with the real interesting ones.

    4. The graph in the upper part of the account window isn’t displayed correctly when mouse isn’t over it (it cuts the labels with the indication of 0€, 100€, etc on the right)

    5. iPhone app: this is a piece of advice more than a change request. Don’t make the mistake most of the developers of similar apps did: don’t try to replicate all funcionalities of the desktop application on the mobile device. The iPhone app must support, not replace the desktop application, when one is out. But I saw you’re in the right direction here, it’s a lot more simple to use than the other I tried (iCompta). To me by the way, even having the possibility to add or modify accounts on the mobile app is too much. One should setup the whole thing on the computer and use the mobile basically to add transactions on the fly, viewing budgets and reports. So I’d personally cut out the account management and add a fast way to add transactions (a step by step wizard would be great) and a view of the reports, moving the categories management part in the settings tab maybe.

I have been trying to import statements from bank of America but have not been able to get the software to do it correctly.

After importing, the amount and running balance do not match. seems like the balance is shown in a different order than the rest of data. The transaction orders also do not match those on the statement downloaded.

This has made the desktop version which I paid for useless.

This software is amazing and with the iPhone app is the best, the only request i have is: make the transaction section for the iPhone app to be more fast, for example in one screen you could input the amount, the date and the category. Also i would like to know if there will be an spanish translation of the Mac version? thank you.

Hi, first congrats for the great work! I just want to comment that there is one important feature missing (or I didn’t figure out how to do it): Compare budgets with expected earnings. With this I can plan my month more precisely and will not need to use any spreadsheet to mount my budget.
Besides that, this is an awesome app! Keep the good work.

  8. Ken Wallich says:

The new import features are fast and accurate. My only problem is I use mint.com to automatically gather and categorize transactions from a variety of sources, but the CSV it produces is only partially compatible with squirrel, since transaction amounts are in two columns, the amount, and a “debit/credit” column, so I end up going in and editing after each import to correct the debit items. Don’t know if the mint/squirrel user overlap is big enough to justify adding special support for them, but thought I’d lobby for it!

    Spectacular app!
Do you have any road map for it?
I’m too curious to see what is coming next!

    Hey There,

I use squirell on my mac and iphone – i also have it setup on my wife’s iphone. We both sync to the mac, but often find that accounts sync with the wrong one, and each phone has to be re-paired (reselect the library) after the other one has been connected with squirrell.
I’d love to see some type of support for syncing multiple iphones with one computer.
That said, our use of this works pretty good right now – and it’s awesome to have us both able to keep watch on our shared budgets and how much is left. (Even better would be an over the air sync!)

    Thanks – great app

word is out that squuirrel will not work with 10.6, will there be an update any time soon ? I paid for the program and wish to keep using it as it works great with my iphone.

    Thanks

    The desktop app looks promising!

The iphone version might require more work in the UI area however.. Like a commenter to another post, it seems that the animation at the start of the iphone app makes it feel “sluggish” psychologically. A positive example might be what another free app “Spend Lite” is doing, which you might want to take a look at. They used a loading screen that mimics the actual app interface, and gives a more sprightly feel. They also require fewer “clicks” to get required work done, such as performing a transaction. At the moment the current iphone app is keeping me back from fully adopting this program..

Thanks! Keep up the great work!
