Squirrel 0.8 public beta test – Snow Leopard compatible

It’s been a few months since the last update of Squirrel, and we’re now opening a public beta test for Squirrel 0.8.

Back in May when Squirrel 0.7.5 came out, our next plans were to greatly improve the reports. They had been designed very early in Squirrel’s development and they had almost never changed. Since then, we introduced tags and many users requested a better way to analyze their spendings according to their tags, and even see a list of the transactions for that particular category.

Squirrel 0.8 features a new reporting engine with 3 modes: categories, tags and transactions list. As your spendings are displayed on the screen, you can now click on a particular category or tag, and transactions will be filtered according to that. This allow you to dive into your spendings to analyze them in detail. You can now also change the timeframe on the fly.

This new version also introduces forecasting based on scheduled transactions. Go to the preferences to enable that, and choose a forecasting timeframe. Squirrel will generate the next occurrences of your scheduled transactions. Their amount is dynamically changed as other transactions change. Those occurrences are in read-only mode though, which means you won’t be able to edit them until they have been “payed” in the Schedules section.

Then we’ve also implemented support for multiple iPhone and/or iPod Touch syncing. This has been requested by many of you who manage their budgets with their husband or wife.

Those were the new features for Squirrel 0.8. During its development, Snow Leopard compatibility issues showed up and I had to fix them. Many parts of the code have been rewritten, but that allowed me to bring some performance improvements.

Because of all these new features, and because Snow Leopard comes out today, we’re opening an open beta test for Squirrel 0.8. Don’t forget to make a backup of your database if you wish to test it. Feel free to send your feedback to axel@squirrelapp.com.

Belle évolution de l’interface, très agréable. Les opérations automatiques grisées dans les comptes sont bien pensées :) Bref du bon boulot, que j’attendais de pied ferme pour Snow Leopard.
    Merci !!

Fantastic update, great work guys and thanks for such a quick response to the Snow Leopard problems.
Wouldn’t it be great if every software company had such great customer support.

  8. Mathias says:

Been trying it out while sorting some bills that I haven’t been able to take care of until now, and everything looks great! Really like the way you can select a category and list transactions and tags, been trying out different ways of differentiating my reports into more specific areas, but ended up with a lot more categories than I wanted. This update solves that problem beautifully. Keep up the great work!

Thanks for the public beta, I really wasn’t expecting that I would be able to sync both my iPhone and iPhone Touch, that’s GREAT !!!!

Thanks so much. It was nice to find within minutes of discovering that Snow Leopard and my previous version of Squirrel weren’t working well together that you’d already got a fixed beta out. Much appreciated.

Excellent new features! I was scarred when I´ve finished Snow Leopard intallation and Squirrel just didn’t work at all! I just run to squirrel web and found a new release!!! Now you just need to be able to split transactions into several categories, and the app will be perfect for home use.

  13. Amazing work !!

I love all the new features ! Keep that way. You’re growing an awsome app with every upgrade.

  14. Marie-Thérèse says:

Pfffui :o ) I am relieved to find the new Squirrel version. I also could not use the schedulded transactions anymore after upgrading to Snow Leopard. I like that now you can see the schedulded transactions listed also. Thank you.

  15. Herbert Schuiran says:

I love the new reporting engine with 3 modes. However, I would still like to be able to sort according to the amount of the transaction when in Transaction List, allowing to quickly see the biggest expenses. Thanks!

  16. philippe says:

  17. Ceto says:

I had kept Squirrel in the drawer for a few months, I have already upgraded to Snow Leopard and now that I just bought an iPod Touch 3rd Generation I downloaded the app and expected to install the latest stable release and play sync. But it turned out 0.7.5 doesn’t do it on 10.6. I’ll wait for this 0.8 to be stable grade and hope I can then can using VMware Fusion mostly for Money 2002…

  19. Mani says:

Just downloaded the latest update and it is awesome. Great UI tweaks and the reports have improved big time! Keep up the great work!

  20. Arne says:

Great update. I use Squirrel daily and wouldn’t have wanted to miss it after moving to snow leo. Do you plan on adding tags to the iphone version as well. without it they don’t really make sense to me as I don’t want to re-work all the data punch into the iphone on my mac..
Besides I wish there was a way I could get a report sorted not only chronologically but by categories and be able to print it as pdf. That’s the one and only thing I am still missing, besides Squirrel is just perfect for me!

  21. Good App.
Ever thought of adding multiple currency management?
That would be a great feature.

    Tim
