Squirrel 0.8.2 introduces multiple currencies support, and the beta test begins today. Many of you have been eager to see this, and it’s been a real challenge to implement.
Basically, when you spend some money in a foreign currency, Squirrel 0.8.2 knows how much it represents in your base currency, based on the exchange rates of transfers between your accounts. Moreover, when you edit one of the amounts of the transactions of a transfer, Squirrel updates the exchange rate just as you would expect.
Still, before releasing the Squirrel into the wild, we need to validate this system. If you want to be a beta tester, you can download the first version there:

Don’t hesitate to send your feedback, tell us how it works for you.
Be advised you should make a backup of your data before using this beta version. The iPhone sync has also been deactivated as Squirrel for iPhone is not compatible yet with this new system. We’re currently working on it, and it should be submitted to Apple as soon as the multiple currencies system is validated.
The zip file contains detailled information about the multiple currencies support in Squirrel. If you have any questions, please send an email to axel@squirrelapp.com so we can update the documentation.

Congragulations on the multiple currency milestone! Happy beta testing everyone. I’m keeping iphone syncing for now, so I’ll join the bandwagon next time.
Great, this is what I needed to purchase Squirrel!
I’ve been testing it out, and except for some instability (updating my previous test DB squirrel crashed, since it was just test info no big deal, just removed the old DB and preference files) and some layout bugs (e.g. when you are doing something that doesn’t require multiple currencies, you can still see a bit of the field, it is not being hidden correctly), it seems to be working pretty good.
I do have one request, please let the conversion field support up to at least 5 decimal points (e.g. 0.67361) because the banks (at least here in Portugal, but I assume it is a market stipulation) use such level of detail, and currently you round to 3 if I’m not mistaken, which will make inconsistencies occur. However, I think that you only force to 3 decimal points if we deselect the field, if we write the value with more than 3 decimal points and hit done it uses the 5 decimal points (at least that’s what it felt like to me).
Keep up the good work! ;-]
It’s been a month already guys. Do you have an ETA on when iPhone synching will be enabled? Has an app been submitted to the App Store yet? I hope it’d be available in a few days, otherwise, I may have to revert back. The synching simply rocks and it’s been quite itchy not having it.
I’m still hunting bugs and I won’t be able to submit any iPhone app before the Mac application is bug free. The iPhone app is to use the exact same code as the Mac app. I’m sorry the beta version won’t sync with the iPhone before it’s totally bug free. A new version is to come soon though.
Thanks for letting us know Axel.
Looking forward to the next version.
Axel, don’t forget to try to add the Split option to a transaction! Actually I think it’s the only thing that is missing in Squirrel: the ability of under one particular transaction encapsulate several categories! This way, one only transaction that I’ve made using my Credit Card in a shop can include more than 1 category!
I’m sure split transactions are on the road map, but agreed: of all my thoughts on Squirrel, this is the main feature in terms of day to day use I regularly wish I had.
P.S. Happy bug hunting Axel
appreciate the new features
How are things going? I was a bit too hasty with the upgrade, and I miss the iphone sync more and more every day – is there an approximate date for it to work again?
Hi! One small request for the next update: a dialog to confirm transaction delete! I’ve this problem several times… I just click the “-” sign instead of the “+” and that selected transaction is gone! If I know the transaction selected, its more easy to replace, but if I don’t know what was erased… you can guess the problem…
Looking forward for a new version of Squirrel!!!
I have that problem on occasion too Antonio. Undo works. Sometimes, though I’m not sure how much I’ve messed things up… and how many undos I should do.
Excuse me. Will the development of Squirrel keep going?
It’s adorable but still a little buggy to use.
Looking forward to the next release. ; )
Looking for the update
Do you have any news for Squirrel’s users? Waiting for stable release and iphone sync..
Hi Axel, how’s going with the new iPhone app? I need the multi currency feature so I’m using the beta version on the Mac, but I really miss the iPhone app and I still can’t use it with the 8.2b!
Would be nice to be able to split transactions so that a purchase can have multiple categories or tags assigned. For example if you bought pharmacy items and groceries in the same purchase.
